The Smart City phenomenon in Spain

Print PDF

ESTA ACTIVIDAD SERÁ IMPARTIDA SOLO EN INGLÉS

What is a smart city? Why is it so much talked about in academia? What do we really mean by smart? The changes taking place in our society, both on the technological, political, economic and social side, are forcing us to rethink the concept/phenomenon we call the smart city. This transformative trend in the urban landscape has taken hold in recent years, as innovative and sustainable projects and a growing interest in advanced technologies have driven the Spanish smart city market. The growing interest in smart cities and the need to address the challenges of urbanisation have led to increased public and private investment in technology development and deployment. There is a need for tools to help decision-makers take actions in the desired direction, translate them to the operational level and evaluate the progress of cities in pursuing these goals. The course therefore asks what a smart city ecosystem is and what its social implications are. In particular, are the projects implemented in recent years really innovative and sustainable? Through the lens of sociological research, the course will provide the theoretical and methodological bases for analysing the obstacles to the smart phenomenon.
