Legal English for law-related and language-related professions

El curso de verano que se propone tiene como objetivo formar en inglés jurídico a profesionales relacionados tanto con el ámbito del derecho (magistrados, fiscales, letrados, abogados, notarios, mediadores, etc.) como de la lengua (filólogos, traductores, intérpretes, revisores, etc.), así como a a alumnos de carreras relacionadas con ambos ámbitos. El curso, que se imparte íntegramente en inglés, se divide en dos partes: la primera parte, impartida por lingüistas, se centrará en la descripción de las peculiaridades del inglés jurídico desde el punto de vista de su pronunciación, su gramática y su terminología; la segunda parte, impartida por juristas, se dedicará al análisis de temas de actualidad jurídica como el derecho de familia en la Unión Europea, la ciberdelincuencia, el derecho mercantil en la Unión Europea y la cooperación en materia civil en la Unión Europea.

COURSE SUMMARY
This course, which is taught fully in English, deals with the study of and practice with the peculiar features of legal English, including its pronunciation. It also analyses the sources of legal vocabulary in English, in particular in the European Union. Legal experts will focus on four areas: (1) family law in the European Union (EU); (2) commercial law in the EU; (3) cybercrime and (4) cooperation in civil matters in the EU. The course is aimed at any law- or language-related professionals or students who wish to improve their level of legal English.
ALL SESSIONS WILL BE IN ENGLISH.
ONLINE COURSE (LIVE STREAM OR RECORDED LIVE STREAM). IF FOR ANY REASON SESSIONS CANNOT BE WATCHED LIVE, THE COURSE CAN BE COMPLETED UNTIL 1 SEPTEMBER BY WATCHING THE SESSIONS IN DEFERRED MODE.

THE COURSE IS AIMED AT:
(a) anyone related to the legal professions and law (or law-related) studies: law undergraduates or postgraduates, PhD students, judges, lawyers, prosecutors, court officers, legal advisors, arbitrators, mediators, criminologists, etc.;
(b) anyone related to English Studies and Linguistics: English language or linguistics undergraduates or postgraduates, PhD students, etc.;
(c) anyone related to legal translation and interpretation;
(d) general public who are interested in legal English for the European Union. - Goals
- Mejorar la pronunciación, gramática y vocabulario en inglés en el ámbito jurídico, así como perfeccionar el conocimiento y dominio en inglés de temas de actualidad jurídica.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To familiarise participants with:
(1) the pronunciation of legal English;
(2) the peculiar features of legal English;
(3) legal English terminology (and phraseology) in the European Union;
(4) family law in the EU, commercial law in the EU, cybercrime (challenges and legal response) and civil cooperation in the EU. - Methodology

- Para superar el curso es necesario llevar a cabo dos tareas:
(1) Descargar y leer la documentación que se pondrá a disposición de los alumnos en el curso/aula virtual;
(2) Enviar al correo electrónico del curso (eulegalenglish@gmail.com) un texto en inglés de unas 300 palabras en el que los participantes expliquen en inglés qué es lo que han aprendido tanto en las sesiones impartidas por lingüistas como en las sesiones impartidas por juristas.
El plazo de envío es el 1 de septiembre de 2020.

The course will be successfully completed by carrying out two tasks:
(1) Download and read the documents that will be available on the online platform;
(2) Send to the course email address (eulegalenglish@gmail.com) a 300-word text in English where participants have to explain what they have learnt in the sessions delivered by both the language and the legal experts.
