El curso desarrolla aspectos teóricos y sobre todo prácticos del inglés jurídico. Se estudian y practican los rasgos peculiares del inglés jurídico así como la pronunciación de los términos jurídicos en inglés. Se describen diferencias fundamentales entre los llamados sistemas de derecho común y de derecho civil de la Unión Europea y se explica cómo se reflejan dichas diferencias en el vocabulario jurídico en inglés que se emplea en la Unión Europea, y se practica con ejercicios. Respecto a la parte impartida por juristas, se cubrirán tres aspectos relacionados con la Unión Europea y el inglés jurídico: (1) el espacio penitenciario europeo; (2) medidas de protección de víctimas y Orden de Protección Europea y (3) retos de la lucha antiterrorista en Europa Occidental.

AVISO IMPORTANTE: en principio todas las sesiones se impartirán en inglés.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course deals with the study of and practice with the peculiar features of legal English, as well as the pronunciation of legal terminology in English. It also analyses the sources of legal vocabulary in English in the European Union, and includes practice with exercises on terminology that will help participants use legal vocabulary more accurately and effectively. Legal experts will focus on three aspects related to the European Union and legal English: (1) the European penitentiary space; (2) counter-terrorism challenges for prosecutors and lawyers in Western Europe and (3) protective measures across the EU, more specifically the European Protection Order.

ALL SESSIONS WILL BE IN ENGLISH.

THIS COURSE CAN BE DONE ON-SITE OR ONLINE (STREAMING OR RECORDED BROADCAST).

Esta actividad permite al estudiante poder recibir la actividad desde su casa, sin necesidad de ir al centro.

Aimed at

(a) personas relacionadas con el ámbito jurídico (estudiantes y/o licenciados o graduados en derecho o grados afines, jueces y magistrados, abogados, fiscales, procuradores, letrados de la administración de justicia, asesores legales, árbitros de derecho, mediadores, criminólogos, etc.);
(b) personas relacionadas con los estudios ingleses (alumnos licenciados y/o graduados en estudios ingleses, en lingüística o en grados afines, ya que la enseñanza del inglés especializado es una gran salida profesional al ser este una lingua franca);
(c) personas relacionadas con la traducción jurídica y jurada y la traducción profesional; aunque en el curso no se traducirá el vocabulario al español más que de forma puntual, se trata de una formación de gran utilidad para traductores jurídicos y/o jurados así como para traductores profesionales de textos especializados;
(d) público en general que quiera saber más sobre el inglés jurídico en la Unión Europea y el papel que éste desempeña.

COURSE ADDRESSEES
(a) anyone related to the legal professions and law (or law-related) studies: law undergraduates or postgraduates, PhD students, judges, lawyers, prosecutors, court officers, legal advisors, arbitrators, mediators, criminologists, etc.;
(b) anyone related to English Studies and Linguistics: English language or linguistics undergraduates or postgraduates, PhD students, etc.;
(c) anyone related to legal translation and interpretation who is interested in improving their legal vocabulary in English;
(d) general public who are interested in legal English for the European Union.

Goals

Familiarizar a los participantes con:
(1) la pronunciación del inglés jurídico;
(2) los rasgos peculiares del inglés jurídico;
(3) el vocabulario jurídico en inglés en la Unión Europea;
(4) el espacio penitenciario europeo; las medidas de protección de víctimas y la Orden de Protección Europea y los retos de la lucha antiterrorista en Europa Occidental.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
To familiarise participants with:
(1) the pronunciation of legal English;
(2) the peculiar features of legal English;
(3) legal English terminology in the European Union;
(4) the European penitentiary space, protection measures for victims and the European Protection Order and counter-terrorism challenges for prosecutors and lawyers in Western Europe.

Methodology

Curso práctico con un 40% de componente teórico.

Grading system

Para superar el curso es necesario llevar a cabo dos tareas:
(1) descargar y leer la documentación que se pondrá a disposición de los alumnos en el curso virtual;
(2) enviar al correo electrónico de la Directora del curso (esamaniego@flog.uned.es) un texto en inglés de unas 300 palabras en el que los participantes en el mismo expliquen en inglés qué es lo que han aprendido tanto en las sesiones impartidas por lingüistas como en las sesiones impartidas por juristas. El plazo de envío es el 1 de septiembre de 2019.

The course will be successfully completed by carrying out two tasks:
(1) downloading and reading the documents that will be available on the online platform;
(2) sending to the course Director’s email address (esamaniego@flog.uned.es) a 300-word text in English where participants have to explain what they have learnt both in the sessions given by the language experts and in the sessions given by the legal experts. The deadline for submission is 1 September 2019.
